Why use good shingles?

It’s easy to ignore your roof until it leaks or is damaged in a weather event. Now you’re faced with replacing this expensive and critical price of your home, and sometimes in a hurry. So what do you do? Ask for the cheapest roof, go with a premium steel shingle or metal roof, or something in between?

The one of the few reasons to cheap out on your shingles is that you simply can’t afford anything else to take care of an immediate roof replacement situation. You are still charged for all the labor of demo and install. So you are only saving yourself by reducing the lifespan of your roof to 15-20 years. These roofs run the risk of failure much sooner and great susceptibility to wind and hail damage. 3 tab singles are an example of this.

A moderate or good roof is a middle-middle upper architectural shingle like Owen’s Corning Duration. It provides and excellent value for your dollar and make a 25-30 year roof. This is my typical installation for customers in the Midwest, and we have had great success with them. They add 100% value to the home the moment they are installed. And they are expected in my area.

High end roofing might be for you, but probably not. The asphalt roofs with class 4 wind ratings, or the steel shingles, or even a metal roof are great, but unless you plan to live in a home for 30+ years, you will not see full return on investment. These roofs run from 20% more cost to nearly double the cost of a typical roof.
